How We Make Our Perfect Hot Matcha Latte
Josephine AuShare
Matcha is a timeless part of Japanese culture, cherished for its role in tea ceremonies. While the iced version has gained popularity, there’s something special about the warmth and comfort of a hot matcha latte. It's a great alternative to coffee, offering the same smooth energy boost without the jitters.
Using our organic ceremonial grade Matcha ensures a creamy, flavorful drink, rich in antioxidants and with a perfect balance of earthy and umami flavors. Oat milk is our top pick for a hot matcha latte, providing a naturally sweet, velvety finish that enhances Matcha’s unique taste. Other plant-based milks like almond, soy, or coconut also work beautifully depending on your preference. For this recipe, we recommend starting with 2 teaspoons of Matcha for each cup, adjusting to suit your strength preference.
When prepared correctly, a hot matcha latte becomes a soothing ritual—perfect for those moments when you need to slow down and enjoy something warm and nourishing.
Ingredients:
- 2 tsp organic Japanese ceremonial Matcha
- 60ml of warm filtered water (80°C / 176°F)
- 1 cup of oat milk (or plant-based milk of choice: coconut, almond, soy, etc.)
- Optional sweetener: 1/4 teaspoon honey (this is our go-to Matcha sweetener), agave, maple syrup, or brown sugar syrup.
Instructions:
- Heat 60ml of filtered water to 80°C / 176°F.
- Sift 2 teaspoons of Matcha into a Matcha bowl to prevent clumps.
- Add 30ml of the warm water to the Matcha. Using a bamboo whisk, whisk in circular motions until a smooth paste forms.
- Pour in the remaining 30ml of warm water and whisk using quick Z and W motions to create a frothy layer.
- Carefully pour the Matcha into a separate cup or mug.
- If you have an electric milk frother: Froth 1 cup of your preferred milk in the frother at a warm to hot setting. If your frother doesn’t have a heating function, warm it separately in a pot before frothing.
- If you do not have an electric milk frother: Heat 1 cup of your preferred milk in a separate pot until warm (but not boiling). Pour into a bowl and use a baking hand whisk to froth the milk.
- Slowly pour the frothed milk into your cup or mug with the Matcha.
- Optional: Add your preferred sweetener.
- Lightly stir, and enjoy!
